The purpose of this publication is to improve the quality of the written information sent to women who are called back for further investigation following initial breast screening. The guidelines include check lists for initial invitation letters, and letters and leaflets recalling women for assessment. They also include a summary of issues which women find reassuring, and suggestions for avoiding words or phrases which can be worrying for women. The guidelines are based on a study of the written information needs of women and on the evaluation of letters and leaflets in current use.
