Review of Mammography Equipment and its Performance

The NHS Breast Screening Programme established the National Coordinating Centre for the Physics in Mammography at the beginning of 1991. Primary objectives of the centre are to:

• review the quality assurance of the physics aspects of mammography as part of the national system
• liaise with regional quality assurance centres, gather physical performance data and feedback results of national reviews
• respond to requests for help or information from regional centres
• assist in the development of standards and test procedures for monitoring performance and mammographic equipment

One of the ways the centre has set about achieving these objectives has been to establish a national database on the mammography equipment used in the NHSBSP. This report analyses the information contained in the database.
