This publication brings together experience of screen-detected ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) gained over the past twenty years of the NHS Breast Screening Programme. It reflects current understanding and uncertainties about the management of women with screen-detected DCIS and describes the Sloane Project, which is a UK-wide prospective audit designed to address some of these uncertainties. It is intended that the publication will be a useful source of information about DCIS and that it will encourage participation in the research initiatives.
