Designed to ensure that women are told what screening can and cannot achieve, the leaflet includes an explanation about false positive and false negative results, and addresses the need to inform patients about the use made of personal information for audit, as set out in the General Medical Council guidance on confidentiality. This means that women should be able to make a genuinely informed choice based on an understanding about why they are attending for screening, and what happens to their records after being screened. The information will be sent to all women in England with their invitation for breast screening. A leaflet called Understand Breast Screening, published May 2004 and produced by Cancerbackup in association with the NHS Breast Screening Programme, complements Breast Screening - The Facts. Copies of 'Breast Screening - THE FACTS' can be ordered from the Department of Health publication orderline: Telephone: 0300 123 1002, Textphone: 0300 123 1003, Fax: 01623 724 524, Email orders: [email protected] |
