The realisation that a virus is primarily the cause of cervical cancer has revolutionised not only the understanding of the disease but also its management. With this in mind, the NHS Cervical Screening Programme has published this document which aims to give an up to date and authoritative version of the aetiology (causes) of cervical cancer and at the same time, an in-depth description of the virus concerned, the human papilloma virus (HPV).
