The project, commissioned by the NHS Cancer Screening Programmes, was a collaboration between the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), the University of Sheffield and the Royal Free Hospital, London.

It examined the effects of changing referral strategies within the established structure of colposcopy practice in the NHSCSP and considered the effects of the new strategy on colposcopy workload, patient waiting times and associated costs and health benefits.

User-friendly versions of both the colposcopy capacity model and the cost-effectiveness model are currently available for use in the clinic setting. Within these Excel models, clinics are able to choose from a number of policy options and input data around the way in which their clinic is currently run in order to assess the impact of potential future policy changes upon capacity and/or cost-effectiveness within the individual clinic setting. These models, accompanied by brief user manuals, can be downloaded from the ScHARR website.
